Pirelli Calendar 2016: Empowering Women

December 6th 2015 by

In January everybody awaits the release of the Pirelli calendar. I grew up flicking through the pages of the Pirelli Calendar, (it’s quite an important calendar in Italy) and I was always fascinated by the beauty of the women depicted in the images. I also had the opportunity to look at the backstage images of the photo shoot they did in 2008, as the father of a friend of mine was working as a photographer on the set. I was always charmed by the locations that they picked and by how different renowned photographers depicted the most attractive models on earth in their own way – portraying their unique view of beauty.

I was intrigued when in September, Pirelli, the Italian auto company announced that the photographer (Annie Leibovitz) was going to change the concept behind the calendar for the 2016 edition; depicting women of all ages and achievements. The first images were released a week ago, which included the musician Yoko Ono, Serena Williams semi-naked and comedian Amy Schumer. The images are simple- black and white- no retouching, no chaotic background, just a plain wall. The images are elegant, beautiful, strong and not sexual.

In addition to the aforementioned women, the 2016 Pirelli Calendar also features portraits of actress and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Yao Chen, model Natalia Vodianova, Hollywood producer Kathleen Kennedy, art collector Agnes Gund with her granddaughter Sadie Rain Hope-Gund, film director Ava DuVernay, Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat and singer Patti Smith.

I am so glad that finally someone decided to photograph and praise women for their achievements and not for their body. I hope that this calendar serves as inspiration for many young girls like me that hope to accomplish something in their lives, proving that no matter where you come from, who you are, your race, your size, your age, you can be however you want to be. This calendar should be a stimulus and a reminder to all women: never stop chasing after your dreams. The women depicted in the 2016 Pirelli Calendar never did and this is what made led them to where they are.
